Repair & restoration - Marin & Bay Area
Restoration that respects the rug.
A handmade rug is built to last for generations - with the right care at the right moment. We offer fringe repair, binding and selvage work, reweaving, and moth-damage repair for antique and Oriental rugs throughout Marin, San Francisco, and the Bay Area, always approaching repair as conservation first: stabilize, then restore, matching materials and technique to the original weave.
What we do
From quick stabilization to full restoration.
Fringe & end finishing
Securing and rebuilding worn ends and fringes before unraveling spreads into the field.
Selvage & edge work
Re-wrapping and rebuilding side cords and edges - the first lines of defense against wear.
Reweaving & holes
Hand reweaving of worn areas and holes with hand-spun, naturally dyed wool matched to the original.
Moth & pest damage
Assessment and repair of moth damage, plus advice to prevent recurrence.
Blocking & flattening
Correcting curl, ripples, and out-of-square shapes so a rug lies properly again.
Conservation mounting
Backing and mounting for fragile pieces and trappings intended for the wall.
Our approach
Clean first, then restore.
Repair and restoration are best performed when a rug is clean, so the restorer matches clean wool to a clean piece - colors and textures line up, and the repair disappears into the weave. We will always tell you, at the time of washing, whether conservation is worthwhile.
We are candid about cost versus value. For some rugs, a modest stabilization preserves decades of use; for others, extensive restoration is worth it because the piece is exceptional. Either way, you get an honest recommendation before any work begins.

Questions
Good to know
Should I repair an antique rug, or leave it alone?
It depends on the piece and the damage. Active unraveling (worn fringes, failing edges) should be stabilized promptly; cosmetic wear may be best left for character. We give an honest recommendation.
Will a repair be visible?
Done well, and on a clean rug, repairs blend into the weave using matched hand-spun, naturally dyed wool. We can also do visible conservation stabilization when that is the right call.
Do you restore rugs not purchased from you?
Yes. We restore rugs from any source - bring it in or send photos for an initial assessment.
