Bidjar rugs

Bidjar rugs - the "iron rugs" of Persia.

Woven in Persian Kurdistan, Bidjar rugs are legendary for their density and durability - packed so tightly they were nicknamed the "iron rugs" of Persia. We carry antique Bidjars and a deep group of one-of-one new Bidjar recreations, from small rugs to heirloom, investment-grade carpets.

Know your Bidjar

Built like a tank, drawn like a jewel.

A great Bidjar combines a stiff, heavy handle with crisp drawing - Herati and medallion fields, shield and tulip motifs, and indigo grounds that age beautifully. They lie flat, wear slowly, and reward generations of use.

Our new Bidjars are woven by descendants of the original weaving families using indigenous wool and natural dyes - close enough to the antiques, as we like to say, to cause headaches for future appraisers.

Questions

Good to know

Why are Bidjar rugs called "iron rugs"?

Because of how they are woven - an exceptionally dense, compacted foundation that makes them stiff, heavy, and remarkably durable, far beyond a typical Persian rug.

Do you sell antique Bidjars or new ones?

Both. We carry antique Bidjar originals and a large selection of one-of-one new Bidjar recreations woven with traditional materials. Each listing states which it is.

What sizes do Bidjars come in?

Everything from small 4x6 rugs to room-sized 8x12 carpets and long runners. We currently have Bidjars across that full range - just tell us your dimensions.
