“What's it worth?” is the most common question we hear, and the honest answer is always: it depends, and it requires a real look. Here is how appraisal works and how to start.
What drives a rug's value
- Origin & type, a Bidjar, Tabriz, or fine tribal piece carries different value than a generic rug.
- Age, genuine antiques command a premium over later pieces.
- Materials & weave, hand-spun wool, natural dyes, knot density.
- Condition, wear, repairs, and structural integrity.
- Rarity & demand, some types and sizes are simply harder to find.
Different values for different purposes
There is no single “the value.” An insurance (replacement) appraisal reflects what it would cost to replace the rug and is typically higher than a fair-market value used for estates, donation, or sale. Make sure your appraisal matches your purpose.
