How to Buy an Antique Rug Online Without Guessing

Buying an antique rug online can be perfectly sensible, but only if the dealer gives you enough information to evaluate the rug as an object, not just as a decoration.

Start with full photography

Ask for a straight full-view photo, the back, all four corners, pile close-ups, edge and end shots, and any areas of wear or restoration.

Ask for video in natural light

Color is the hardest thing to judge online. A short video in natural light helps you see surface, sheen, pile direction, and how the palette changes as the rug moves.

Require plain condition notes

You want to know about pile wear, foundation, sides, ends, holes, dry areas, stains, color run, repiling, reweaving, patches, and any chemical washing.

Understand approval terms before shipping

For qualified U.S. buyers, in-home approval can reduce risk dramatically. Before anything ships, confirm timing, deposit, shipping method, insurance, return window, and who covers return shipping if the rug is not right.

Buy the dealer as much as the rug

A good dealer can explain why a rug is priced the way it is, where it sits in the market, and what tradeoffs you are making.
